Not only can we confirm thanks to Jeff Staple that the Burton x Carhartt collaboration is happening, we can even give you a look at one of the jackets that is part of the collection.
Two great brands with a lot of heritage got together, the outcome are technical jackets in classic Carhartt colors, a meaningful mix of the strenghts of both brands. A while back when we interviewed Greg Dacyshyn, he provided a pic with him already wearing one of the jacket of the collaboration (by the way, the board you see in the pic is an upcoming Burton x Playboy collaboration). This will already give you an idea of what to expect!

The Punk movement had a huge part to play in the creation and philosophy behind Streetwear, independant thought, rebellion, all aspects of the foundings of Streetwear, recent commentary has gone on to doubt the livelihood of the current streetwear movement, my feelings are that this is a mere result of cultural and economic spread deomgraphically and geographically. Its caused what was originally a niche philosophy and industry into the hands of more people. The result of cause a dilution of its origins. Whether it be Hip Hop, Skate, Punk or whatever other origins of your streetwear offerings, there are still those who covet the founders philosophy, they are merely hidden amongst numerous others who lack an understanding. Panic Attack focuses on the Art that boomed through this culture and era of Punk, many names which are now synomous with the era and have inspired a new wave of artists. "Also Know As" have been at the fore front of publication in our culture for some time know and it is a pleasure to hear when a new project is in the works. This latest book featuring photography by Yuri Shibuya who has been spending her summers over the last ten years walking the streets and hanging out with the ragtag cast of characters that help define the downtown New York City scene. Yuri has focused on graffiti, street culture, and especially skaters, with a very honest and nostalgic look at street life in one of the world's most upbeat cites New York over the last decade. Here are a few images from the book which is designed by the AKA crew and Yuri Shibuya is expected to land later this year.

Bonham's Urban Art Auction

The highly anticipated 'Urban Art Auction' took place this week at Bonham's, the auction which included a majority of work from Banksey along with the likes of Faile, Blek Le Rat, Keith Haring, Adam Neate, Space Invader, Anthony Micallef and Japanese pop artists Aya Takano, Chiho Aoshima and Takashi Murakami. And as predicted Banksey took centre stage with his top piece fetching an astonishing $443,489 USD with a Space Invader piece fetching an impressive $32,678 USD its not hard to see where this is going...

Reading this I am sure your opinion does not differ from mine as I am writing this, so rather than expressing myself I am going to let the dollar value that Banksey's items sold at do that for me...

Concluding a marathon day at the Greener Gadgets Conference, Allan Chochinov of Core77 took to the stage along with panelist/judges Ryan Block from Engadget, Valerie Casey of The Designers Accord and IDEO, and Jill Fehrenbacher of Inhabit (and Greener Gadgets). Following a whirlwind tour of dozens of notable entries, the panel discussed their top ten, then turned the final vote over the audience in true clap-o-meter style, who's first place choice might have signaled a slight backlash against gadgets--after a whole day of 'em. It was a great session, and we were thrilled with the results. As bottle lightweighting reaches its limits, the handle must go

What does the handle of a milk bottle have in common with a low-rent booking agent? They both take ten percent. UK recycling org WRAP estimates getting rid of the handles on plastic milk bottles will shave 10% off the materials, which means not just cheaper manufacturing costs, but less landfill.
Peter Skelton from WRAP's retail team said: "Plastic milk bottles are probably the most common plastic item found in household waste and manufacturers and brand owners have taken the current handled designs as far as they can go in terms of lightweighting. The vital next step is perfecting a handle-free design which works for the consumer."
Bottle producer Nampak is tackling the project in association with Dairy Crest, which puts out roughly a billion liters of milk in a year. Estimated savings gained by losing their bottle's handle? 1,250 tonnes of HDPE plastic. Designing a better grip feature seems like a small price to pay.

Heres an article written by Metal Man Ed that I found at Boundless NY's blog at Riottt. It's a great piece that looks back at the meaning of graffiti and where it stems from. "To the general population the word “Graffiti” conjures up visions of names and symbols illegally scrawled on walls but to others it is considered a beautiful and overlooked art form. An art form that even despite its general dislike has found its way into mainstream America with huge corporations using it in their products as well as their advertising to target America’s youths as potential customers. Ian McKaye Blacklodges Interview

Ian McKaye is known best as founder of Dischord Records, front man of Minor Threat and Fugazi, and is credited with popularizing the straight edge movement in hardcore.
I saw Fugazi play an amazing show in Auckland in the early 90s. My main memory is Mr McKaye halting the show when a drunk member of the audience attempted to crowd surf and ended up knocking over the overhead drum microphones mid song. Rather than punching him in the jaw, he made a clear and calm request to the audience, that they refrain from violence and try to have a good time. Having made this request, Fugazi struck right back into the song, with seamless precision. via* SlamX

Japanese designer Takahiro Miyashita’s Fall ‘08 menswear line and Paris show draw inspiration from the Ace Hotel Portland.
At his fall 2008 menswear show in Paris on January 17, fashion designer Takahiro Miyashita of Number (N)ine unveiled an inspired collaboration with the Ace Hotel Portland.
A Northwest grunge aesthetic runs through Miyashita’s fall pieces. The show, titled “My Own Private Portland,” opened with an Ace Hotel voicemail message. Portland-made Pendleton wool blankets folded on each seat invited guests to snuggle up.
The utilitarian wool blankets are emblazoned with the Thompson elk, a historical statue located in downtown Portland. Modeled on classic Pendleton hotel blankets, they represent Portland and the collection’s vintage-Americana feel. Ace and Number (N)ine are currently collaborating to create additional products which will be released this fall. You can buy the blankets at Number (N)ine’s Manhattan flagship store, and soon they’ll be at the Ace’s forthcoming NYC outpost.

A Chapel Converted Into a Modern Apartment

The decline in church attendance over the last several decades has meant that countless churches across the Netherlands have lost their function. They are crumbling, are demolished, or are put to new uses. Their specific architectural features often fall by the wayside in this process. Not every church can be turned into a municipal exhibition hall, and if, for example, a residential use is chosen, the original spatial qualities are usually lost. A dutch firm named Zecc has converted an old chapel into an apartment, carefully respecting and enhancing the character of the original building. The chapel was part of a large housing complex of the Friars of Utrecht, which at its height, around the mid-20th century, housed 217 residents. The remaining 13 elderly friars, however, moved to a nursing home in 2005, and the complex was divided up and converted into about 40 apartments. More Pictures Here ::.

Open-source housing: architects collaborate to combat calamities

It's the high-tech version of an Amish barn-raising: Open-source disaster housing.

The Open Architecture Network is an open-source, social-networking community charged with helping to shelter people grappling with poverty and natural disasters. It uses Web 2.0 technologies to enable architects anywhere to upload and share their designs online under a Creative Commons license.

Co-founded by UK architect Cameron Sinclair (who maintains a blog with the excellent title "Design Like You Give a Damn"), the organization hopes to soon incorporate digital maps and CAD drawings that can be collaborated on in real time. Click here for a photo gallery of currently-shared designs.

"Ari Marcopoulos is a Dutch photographer who started working with Andy Warhol. He is particularly into arts, and music when he gets to New York in 1979 where he discovers the Hip Hop scene and starts great friendships with some of the biggest names in the industry like Fab 5 Freddy or Run DMC.

2007 was a big year in Streetwear, a transition into a new generation of streetwear brands making their mark, an older generation moving into a new direction and of course further growth of our niche economically and demographically, we don't just cover streetwear here at Slam though, when we speak of brands and those who made a big impact in 2007 we have to consider all aspects of Pop culture, Apple's moves within the year are an example of a brand name going from strength to strength. Have a look at what some of our friends and bloggers thought of the year thats been as far as which brands had a great year and why....

Fuct, I can't think of a brand in my lifetime that has made as big an impact in one year than Fuct did throughout 2007, and interestingly kept its high standard of quality and respect throughout all that growth. Erik Brunetti's decision to restrict production to Japan and availability of cut and sew to Japan has ensured that the brand will be kept in good steed in years to come as it continues to make one of the most impressive comebacks from any fashion or streetwear brand in some time.

Visvim, in an era where streetwear has become criticised for its lack of quality and inventiveness, Visvim has done nothing but provide the highest standards of quality and continue to create strong trends and a brand which has acquired a cult following. 2007 is merely a continuation of their good work, but with ongoing colaborations with the likes of Comme Des Garcons and others its obvious what direction they are headed, finding that gap between streetwear and fashion so sorely needed, as I expect the likes of Soph, Headporter Plus and Uniform Experiment to be a part of this movement too. Im always a big fan of Undercover, Margiela and Comme all had great years, it was great to see comebacks from Fergadelics Tonite and Moncler also.

One of my favourite magazines Swindle have published an interview with the normally media shy Barry McGee.. its a great interview and a chance to get an insight into the thoughts of one of today's greatest artists.

"Other artists blazed the trail that brought graffiti from the urban landscape into galleries. But no street or graffiti artist who came before Barry “Twist” McGee had executed the transition with such finesse. Born in San Francisco in 1966, a city he continues to make his home, Twist began painting graffiti in 1984 at the age of 18. He began showing his work in local galleries, slowly building a following, and, in 1991, he received a Bachelor of Fine Art in painting and printmaking from the San Francisco Art Institute. This was quickly followed by grants and fellowships—one notably sent him to Brazil, where he observed clustered framed artworks displayed in churches. Sure, the name, Reduced Carbon Footprint Souvenirs, is kind of a mouthful but the extra verbiage is essential in explaining what's behind Héctor Serrano's take on a most popular tourist pastime--purchasing souvenirs.

A collection of souvenirs that can be send by e-mail and then materialize using a 3D Printer (stereolithography rapid prototyping). No transport or standard production methods are required so the object carbon footprint is reduced to the minimum.
The project questions the way objects are manufactured and new technologies are applied to propose alternative ways of reducing their impact on the environment.

Reductive culture-themed laptop design

That there is Portugese design student Joao Olivero's winning entry for a Hewlett-Packard contest to provide custom graphics for a laptop, on display at CES. While it's a tad facile from a cultural perspective--let's see, we've got a yin-yang, a sumo wrestler, a bonsai tree, a dragon, a temple, and two Samurais in a swordfight--it's undeniably eye-popping, which is probably why HP has decided to put the design into production. Should be ready come spring--just in time for Olivero to add some cherry blossoms!

Ideas to make an American-themed counterpart for the Asian market: a cheeseburger, a cow, two boxers, depreciating currency, an icon representing extraordinary rendition, and a house that can't be sold because the market's plummeting.

Euan Myles is a contemporary photographer that has produced some well acclaimed and high profile work including perhaps his finest exhibition 'Trap 6', a collection of photoraphs influenced by the classical formality of animal portraiture of the eighteenth century, images underlined the grace and beauty of the greyhound. Euan has made a successful career in the advertising and design field of photography and another mention would have to be his work for "Irn Bru" which was voted "Best Poster of the Century" by Campaign Magazine in 2000. Other note worthy work includes other poster work with Ink Tank and a fascinating project that he was part of, a group of five photographers commissioned by the Scottish governement to provide their perspective on modern Scotland and the images that were produced are being incorporated in a range of marketing Scotland's excellent quality of life. Nike re-releases the Air Tech Challenge, a shoe made famous by Andre Agassi, the new Archive Series by Burton fits perfectly into the same category. We like to compare Nike and Burton, because both brands are in their market at the forefront in terms of style and innovation and especially at the mix of the two.

Burton did some digging and found Burton's original 1988 Racing Gloves, 1989 Safari Sweatshirt, 1990 Freestyle Shell, 1991 Freestyle Pant, 1991 Freestyle Suit and the 1992 Glacier Jacket. Using the DNA from these classic designs, they futurized them with all the latest tech magic and even added some graphic flavor from the 1989 Cruise board graphic. Old school is now new. Controversial and popular Mapplethorpe's book reveals the themes that would inspire him throughout his career, this book brings together almost three hundred images, many never published, from the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation's archive and private collections.

The holiday fatigue hasn't faded quite yet, but we've managed to summarize 2007 in the world of design, in chronological order to boot. Call it picky, call it terse. It is what it is so enjoy!

Like any other time of year, the iPhone hogged headlines kicking off '07 with a preemptive announcement. A "different" prototype surfaced on eBay. A perfect circle was drawn, the US House of Reps passed the Energy Alternatives bill, and a dizzying diagram told us what was the new what. Popular Jobsisms appeared in a delightful clip and BusinessWeek admitted that the word innovation had officially become nauseating. Monocle made its debut only to heavily disappoint Adam Greenfield at the close of the year. Coroflot hit 50,000 portfolios. Friendly R2D2 mailboxes hit the streets and wireframe was a most literal term when describing Benedict Radcliffe's car. CD spindle cases housed bagels and hamsters shredded paper. Home Depot announced the launch of Eco Options. Sprinkle Brigade made dog turds pretty. The SENZ umbrella actually looked different than all other umbrellas and just when we thought the toast thing was over, along came CNC toast printing. Influential exhibit Design for the Other 90% opened at the Cooper Hewitt. Waffles were made in the shape of keyboards and Jonathan Ive received the National Design Award. A mom used the power of Segway to push her baby, and although we almost forgot about it, the Microsoft Surface was announced. Damien Hirst busted out with that seizure-inducing bejeweled skull while the London 2012 logo proved to be more seizure-inducing. The USA still wasn't metric. Manufactured Landscapes was released (broadcast with Edward Burtynsky + Jennifer Baichwal here) as was the iPhone. A sweaty man waited a long time for one and a SNES spoof video was made--just two of countless amusing iPhone side stories that we don't feel like accumulating nor do we think you'd care for us to accumulate them because we're sure there's an Apple blog out there that's done it already.

7-11 stores got all Simspon-y, Ponoko believed in the design power of the people, and Anya Hindmarch probably had good intentions. Blackle saved a bunch of search watts, Okala Design Guide came out, and (oh lordy) K-Rash designed packaging for dog cologne. We launched the Coroflot Creative Seeds blog. David Ngo did an impressive job of defining design--not an easy feat. The NYT reminded Americans to get back to work. Liz Danzico and Khoi Vin launched A Brief Message. We premiered our Hack2School guide, preparing all walks of design student for semesters to come. We were totally backed up in thinking the Pontiac Aztec was fugly. Someone had an easy time peddling their groceries home. We were like "why?" when Photoshop donned a new logo and Art Lebedev was like "why not?" when debuting the über long Pultius TV remote. Pop!Tech blew our collective mind and we built a giant robot out of milk crates for our Connecting '07 party. Frank Gehry got spanked for a leaky Stata Center. Perfect slices resulted from a laser-cut pizza and Muji opened in NYC. Kindle happened. It got beat down and corrected. Cosmologist Neil Turok, writer Dave Eggers, and religious historian Karen Armstrong were announced as the newest TED Prize winners. Coroflot hit 75,000 portfolios and we presented to you our sparkling new gift guide of 77 items under $77. Philippe Starck became cooler in our book after we watched his enlightening and delightfully-accented TED Talk. Pantone declared 18-3943 Blue Iris as 2008's color of the year. John Maeda was announced as RISD's next president and Yves Behar, the designer himself, story-told the OLPC. And we'll finish our healthy little roundup with another roundup closer--Consumerist's winner of an excellent and real-world take on a Top Ten Products list for 2007...hooray for vinegar!

Planet Of The Apes by Dennis Stock

From January 7th until the 26th, Colette will be hosting the "PLANET OF THE APES" exhibition by Dennis Stock. Born in 1928, Dennis Stock joined Magnum in 1951 after receiving magazine LIFE’s young photography award. He became famous thanks to his memorable James Dean pictures as well as his jazz musicians ones, taken between 1957 and 1960. This series of photographs taken in 1967 on the filming of "Planet of the Apes" is very peculiar because confronting costumes of the movie and every day life in Los Angeles.

For the 60th anniversary of Magnum Photos & for the movie’s 40th, a 12 silver film prints portofolio will be edited and available at colette during the exhibition. Only 12 portfolios will be available.

It is not the first time that we come across furniture made with skateboard parts, but the Skate Study House collection is for sure the most interesting and impressive one to date.

Skate Study House, modern design classics remastered with skateboards. It's a collection by Pierre-André Senizergues and Gil Le Bon de Lapointe. Colette will be showcasing their work as of January 28th.

Everybody has seen a chair made with skatedecks, but the concept is taken much further here. Many famous Vitra pieces, including the Eames chairs get translated into the skateboarding world. Definitel worth checking out!

Grocery Tote

Porter has released a new Grocery Tote, which looks exactly like the paper bag that you get in a supermarket, but it is not made out of paper and of course reusable. The bag comes in the same brownish color, has the same handles and even comes with the triangle pattern on the edges, imitating the paper cutter. Inside it has a light blue lining.

A SUBWAY WORKER’S LEGACY, IN ART FORM

Writing about Marvin Franklin, the artist whose work is on view at the New York Transit Museum from this week through March, it feels natural to focus on the details of his premature and unsettling death — Mr. Franklin was a 55-year-old subway track worker who was killed by a train in March – and on the profound effect that his passing has had on the friends and family he left behind. (A subsequent review found numerous safety lapses and prompted the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to order a series of reforms.)

What can get lost is Mr. Franklin’s art itself, which, by all accounts, was one of the major loves of his life. Friends describe him working at an awe-inspiring pace, filling up a 120-page sketchbook about every two weeks. “It was his life. It was the blood that went through his veins,” Mr. Franklin’s wife, Tenley Jones-Franklin, said at the museum on Wednesday.  On top of that, colleagues at the Art Students League of New York, where Mr. Franklin studied for the last decade, profess admiration for his ability and work ethic. One, Mark Hagan, whose time at the league overlapped with Mr. Franklin’s, called him “a true folk hero.”

For all that, though, the exhibit at the transit museum is the first show ever dedicated to Mr. Franklin’s art. Part of that, no doubt, is the result of his belief, expressed to several people, that he was not ready for such a recognition. But it is also, some of Mr. Franklin’s friends say, a hint at the politics involved in New York’s art scene, and a sign of the difficulties of an artist following his own muse can face getting noticed. Green product claims investigated by FTC

As more and more companies plant "greenery" on their products, consumers are presented with a wave of seemingly responsible choices--but without reading the very fine print and doing a bit of research, how can one deduce who's telling little green lies? After observing a steady surge of eco claims, the Federal Trade Commission wanted to know and clarify exactly that.

TerraChoice Environmental Marketing, which advises companies on green product positioning, reviewed claims companies made about 1,018 widely sold goods. Using metrics from the FTC and the Environmental Protection Agency, TerraChoice concluded that all but one of the claims were false or could be misleading. "If truly green products have a hard time differentiating themselves from the fake ones, then this whole notion of a green market will fall apart," says Scot Case, vice-president at TerraChoice.

If you're feelin' a little bit spoiled from how the holidays are falling on the calendar, and aren't really getting back to work until Wednesday, why not get ahead of the game and start putting together your entry for our Greener Gadget Design Competition? Here's the pitch:

The Greener Gadgets Conference will take place on February 1st, 2008 in New York City. As part of the event, Greener Gadgets has partnered with Core77 to seek out design innovations for greener electronics. This design competition will engage established design firms, emerging designers, and design students to come up with new and innovative solutions to address the issues of energy, carbon footprint, health and toxicity, new materials, product lifecycle, and social development. The top entries will be showcased live at the Greener Gadgets Conference for judging by a panel and the audience, and awards will be given out at the end of the night. Winners will also be showcased on GreenerGadgets.com, Core77.com, and Inhabitat.com.

Design Brief
For this competition we're inviting designers to explore the concept of "Greener Gadgets." Designs should seek to minimize the environmental impact of consumer electronic devices at any stage in the product lifecycle. Areas to consider include, but are not limited to, materials, labor, assembly, packaging, transportation, retailing, use and disposal.

Participants are encouraged to consider their designs as part of the entire product ecosystem, and should think as holistically as possible. Designers may choose to focus their entries on a particular area of human enterprise (learning, playing, communicating, etc.), or a particular context (work, home, school, etc.), a particular material, or a specific device. Entries may also seek to create new paradigms for products and services.

Ultimately, we are looking for "great gadgets" of the greener kind.

Santa's Ghetto in Bethlehem

Santa's Ghetto is a low-cost art event, that has some pretty big names in it. This year (as reported earlier by us) they went to Bethlehem opposite the Church of the Nativity to put their art on the walls.
Participating artists were this year Banksy, Kelsey Brooks, Ron English, Swoon, Blu, Aiko, 3D and many others. There is a dedicated website of the event, showing lots of pictures of the art and the environment that is was created in. It definitely a very impressive art project.
They also released limited edition prints by some of the artists, including Banksy and Kelsey Brooks, but you have to hurry to get one of those!

Pli Design: furniture without the MDF and VOCs

We used to love particle board at design school. That and MDF; it was cheap, relatively sturdy, easy to cut, had no grain, and became the source material for everything from quick coffee tables to chair mockups to desktop additions. Of course, back then we also had a professor who smoked cigarettes in class.
Now we all know particle board will kill you; the VOC off-gases leaking out of the laminates can cause everything from cancer to liver damage. Yet manufacturers continue to use PB and MDF, just as that professor's still smoking.
UK-based Pli Design (whom we previously wrote about for making chairs out of recycled game consoles) is now making furniture that would have typically been made from MDF--coffee tables and cabinets--out of a bamboo veneer with a wheat straw-board core. Essentially the ingredients in their Grass line have come from grass rather than wood, and the table is made without VOCs and all that other central-nervous-system-disrupting stuff.
"...Everyone needs to step back and reinvent the idea of modern manufacture," says Pli Product Manager Alex Whitney. "The 'Grass' series and up coming 'Reee' chair range, made using 100% recycled plastic, show where we see the future of product design."
Here's to hoping others get on board, or rather, on grass.

Line-dryable Dishes

Doing dishes is my contribution to any dinner preparation since I can’t cook. I once burnt to a crisp some hard-boiled eggs, having fallen asleep because watching eggs boil is as exciting as watching C-Span on the mute setting. Changing the change

The conference Changing the Change is about the role and results of design research in the transition towards sustainability. It will be held in Torino, Italy, 10 to 12 July 2008, in the framework of Torino World Design Capital, 2008.

The conference, which is chaired by Ezio Manzini, "seeks to make a significant contribution to a necessary transformation that involves changing the direction of current changes toward a sustainable future", and "specifically intends to outline the state-of-the-art of design research in terms of visions, proposals and tools with which design can actively and positively take part in the wider social learning process that will have to take place."

Detroit: the new Wild West for creatives

It's a familiar story: pioneering artists and creatives move into an abandoned industrial area, infuse the place with creativity and the life that only the right-brained can bring, and within years you've got a revitalized, hip (and no longer affordable) SoHo, Berlin, Billyburg or DUMBO.

Several years ago, an unexpected snowstorm and a shutdown airport following a Michigan State lecture left us crashing with hippie activists in the depths of darkest Detroit. We were shocked to find a vibrant underground community ekeing it out in bombed-out industrial buildings and recognized it as the model described above, in a very nascent stage.

In the years since, Detroit's creative community has continued to grow, but still has room. There are 1,000-square-foot lofts going for US $550 a month. There are places like the Russell Industrial Center, a 2.2-million-square-foot, World-War-I-era bomber factory containing

...a diverse group [of tenants] with specialties like photography, music, painting, interior design, architecture, metal work, glassblowing, graphic design, cabinetry, clothes manufacturing, candle-making, posters and a company...that makes acrylic material that reconfigures shadows and light.

Nearby CCS is producing a steady crop of industrial designers, last month the Detroit Institute of the Arts reopened after a $158 million renovation, and last year the Detroit MoCA opened "in an abandoned car dealership [and] received praise from the New York Times for its 'guerrilla architecture that accepts decay as fact.'"

"When we talk to artists from out-of-town, we mostly talk about opportunities that don't exist elsewhere," [said Mitch Cope, artist and co-owner of Design 99]. "You can come to the city, take over land, do whatever you want."

Mutanen created Thinglink (blog) to be an open online database for anyone, from artists to designers, collectors and trendspotters, to add and publish portfolios with their favourite things.

For a presentation at the Dott Festival, Mutanen's Thinglink team explored how their basic concept could be combined with mobile phones so that you or I would be able to scan products and read their environmental credentials before purchase - more info on WorldChanging.

JuJups 3D design and print portal

Ponoko was huge in pioneering public design and print communities, and now we've heard from Genometri about a new start-up portal that allows for consumer customization and manufacturing called JuJups. It has just launched in time for the 2007 holiday season, with customizable picture frames as its debut product. These might not be the most sophisticated frames out there, but it's "just the beginning of a long journey." The story here is about a starting place, what's to come, and what can be pulled from potential. The technology is provided by Genometri and printing by Z Corp in Boston. JuJups is named after a gummy holiday candy.

We believe that "everyone has an inherent desire - to design" Design is about self expression. It is about satisfying your desires. Once upon a time only a small portion of humanity could read or write. We would like to say that once upon a time "only a few people could designâ€ but, JuJups changed that.

WebUrbanist has an interesting write up of Matt McCormick’s film The Subconscious Art of Graffiti Removal. Although a few years old it can still be found on the Best of Resfest Vol. 3. The short film brings up the interesting concept that one can find art in the painting over of graffiti done by local authorities. Whether you agree with this concept or not its an interesting idea to keep in mind when walking around a city. As if you ever needed more coaxing to get into the waters of the Caribbean, artist JASON TAYLOR has made the island of Grenada a mecca for snorkeling art lovers with his unique underwater sculpture garden, the first of its kind in the world. Covering an area of several hundred square feet just off the island’s southern coast, the “gallery” features hundreds of carefully placed objects and human forms created by Taylor (with the permission of the government) that coexist with the island’s natural reef systems without interfering with their function or damaging their structures. Jay-Z Dropped?

(Contact Music) Apparently Jay-Z is too greedy for Universal to hang on to. This according to what an unnamed source told the New York Daily News. We'll see how reliable this source turns out to be. In the meantime, Contact Music has the report: Rap mogul JAY-Z will reportedly be ditched by his Def Jam record company - because bosses are sick of his excessive demands. The star - real name Shawn Carter - was reportedly keen to leave his post as president of Def Jam, a subsidiary of Universal, in favour of a new contract at Columbia, but new rumours suggest his current label may drop him first.

Rumours of a label change have been rife in the music industry after Jay-Z was reported to be unhappy with Def Jam following the appointment of producer/performer Jermaine Dupri as the president of their urban music division in February this year (07).

But now the rapper could have the decision made for him as his contract with Universal is due to expire at the end of this month (Dec07) and negotiations for a renewal have so far proved unsuccessful. - more on this story

If Banksy's new art in Bethlehem is too much of a stretch for global art lovers, the UK’s seminal live contemporary and street art auction, Evolving Styles, returns to London this Christmas offering a rare chance to invest in works of art by the biggest names in the movement. Original works by the likes of Blek le Rat, FAFI, Dave Kinsey, Faile, DAIM, Xenz and New York graffiti legends, DAZE and CRASH will go under the hammer, while audiences watch world-famous artists including the notorious Flying Förtress, paint canvases live which will be auctioned off on the same night for the world’s largest orphan charity, SOS Children.

On Friday, December 7, there will be exclusive appearances by German art duo, Herakut (GER), Bristol based Mr Jago (UK) and Flying Förtress (GER), who will be performing live at Cargo from 3p.m., with an auction commencing at 6p.m. Audiences can tune in from around the world to watch the live art auction, which will be broadcast in real-time over the internet to allow buyers to bid online via the auction site.

New Era Sessions - European Design Series

In 1954 New Era brought the 59FIFTY to life; a symbol of self-expression, and sport, it has transcended time, bringing a voice to a new era of believers and visionaries. In 2007 New Era’s mission is to fan the fires of individuality and bring a new wave of customization to the forefront. Within this cap there is a history, loyalty, style, and a future.

Born out of the success of New Era’s Capture the Flag program, the European design program NE|SESSIONS sees quality and diversity at the forefront, giving designers the chance to create a truly unique piece of headwear in the form of New Era’s signature silhouette, the 59FIFTY as a one-off piece ready for exhibition in the UK, France and Germany. The limited edition caps will showcase the unique talent of legends, upstarts and forward thinkers whose work mirrors the high quality and constant change of the 59FIFTY.

The first phase of NE|SESSIONS took place in November 2006, with unique designs created by the crème de la crème of the fashion, music, action sport and lifestyle industries, including French fashion designer Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, music producer Mel Beatz, photographer Armen, skateboarder Danny Wainwright and Nadege, a DJ who heads up all PR activities for Parisian boutique, Colette. Nadege is married to another NEW ERA |SESSIONS designer Pedro Winter, the creator of Headbanger Entertainment.

NE |SESSIONS continued with it’s second phase in March of this year with exclusive designs by musician Jack Peñate, street magician Dynamo, grime photographers Tim&Barry, WAD Magazine publisher Bruno Collin, French DJ’s Little Mike and Crazy B and German actor Max Von Thun.

The completed pieces and the inspiration behind each design will be showcased across Europe with the UK designers taking lead in an exhibition in New Era’s first European flagship store in Brewer Street, London. The French and German pieces will be exhibited in New Era’s next flagship stores due to open in the respective countries early Spring 2008.

Despite the Sessions program not being for commercial proposes, three of the exhibited cap designs by Karen Jane, Jack Peñate and Tim & Barry have been made into 12 limited edition pieces to be sold at the London flagship store at 72-74 Brewer Street with 100% profits going to a charity of the designer’s choice.

Sure, South Beach has it's attractions, but there were other places to get the soles of your shoes sticky last night. (Ooo, yuck.) There were tons of design folks at GOOD Magazine's GOOD December Pop-up store opening on Mulberry, drinking up the vodka/cranberries and talking all things positive. There will be lots of activities in the space over the next couple weeks (please start posting them to the blog, GOODies!), but for last night, it was about getting out of the cold, seeing some good friends (sorry), and celebrating progressive action. Quality illustrations may garner cash moneyz at Wikipedia

Skilled illustrators may soon have the chance to be compensated by Wikipedia for creating artwork deemed essential for certain entries. Writers: don't get your hopes up--you're still free labor.

The plan was made possible by a $20,000 donation from Philip Greenspun, "who said he was moved to give the money because of his experience seeing technical books he had originally published online appear in print."

The woman running the project for Wikipedia, Brianna Laugher, says the plan is to create a list of articles that need illustrations and then solicit the work. The first list is expected to have 50 illustrations and be completed this month. Contributors will be able to sign up for an illustration and have two weeks to submit it; if it is accepted, the illustrator will be paid $40.
"The standard payment will be $40, and depending on how it is received it could change in the future," she wrote in an e-mail message. "I really don't know if we will be flooded by illustrators clamoring to join, or if the general response will be one of apathy."
