Electric cars from 98 years ago

An article in the Times shows collector Jay Leno buzzing around on one of his cars, this one rather more exotic than his others, because it's electric. Correction: it's an electric car from 1909.
The article's got some interesting tidbits about old-school electric cars, not least of all this:
At the turn of the 20th century, quiet, smooth, pollution-free electric cars were a common sight on the streets of major American cities. Women especially favored them over steam- and gasoline-powered cars.
Leno goes on to say there were "thousands" of electric cars prowling the streets of New York City--from 1905 to 1915. Who knew? Read all about it here.
